The bear holds deep significance within Diné cultural understanding. A bear attack can carry an impact that may be understood as similar to domestic violence because the affect extends beyond those directly involved. The incident affects the extended families and the community as a whole. In light of the recent incident in Crystal, New Mexico, where an older gentleman succumbed to a bear attack, it is important to approach this matter with care, respect, and sensitivity.
At this time, summer ceremonies that have been scheduled to take place this weekend (08/21/26 – 08/23/26) may proceed and do not need to be stopped or cancelled. Blessing Way–related ceremonies may continue four days after the incident occurred (08/25/26 ). The ceremonial responses that should be made are Protection Prayers only. No offerings should be made directly to the bear!
Please understand that this is a difficult situation for our People. It is especially difficult for the victim and his family. This guidance is offered with respect for the seriousness of the event, to address the cultural significance, and to express the need to support the family and community of Crystal during this time.
